People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills. There is nowhere that a person can find a more trouble free retreat than in his or her own mind. So constantly give yourself this retreat and renew yourself
~Marcus Aurelius
I hope you are all settled into your routines at home and taking time to enjoy the slow moments in life we have been given. Allows for a little perspective during these difficult times. As my mom always says, This too shall pass. If you prescribe to this discipline you know quite well that nothing is permanent and things will eventually change and unfold. If you are finding the days to be difficult like so many of us, can we try to be accepting and patient of what is right now? Something to ponder...
I have been reading this quote and sharing it with my students for the past 7 years. What Marcus Aurelius said centuries ago still holds true today. As the world continues on and gets faster and faster it is vital we have time to slow down and relax the body and mind. Yoga is a philosophical practice deeply rooted in history and tradition. The physical practice is just one part of this discipline. I love the physical practice because it helps alleviate chronic tension we hold in our bodies and cultivates that feeling of spaciousness. But the real heart of the practice teaches and encourages being more present and compassionate with ourselves. As we continue this discipline we strengthen the habit of self compassion and presence with ourselves. When we do this we are able to extend this gift of being present and compassionate to everyone around us. What a gift.
